Be Value-Driven!

Everyone works for a paycheck – right? I mean, who would wake-up, get ready, drive to work and spend long hours working if it wasn’t for the basic fact that we all need money for survival? I don’t think there are too many people who would go to work every day for free. A paycheck for a good week of work is a fair trade-off for sure, but how motivating is it? Maybe it helps people to make decisions about self-preservation (aka – don’t be dumb and lose your job!). A paycheck, all by itself does little to motivate us or drive our decisions to do the right thing when no one is looking.

What does it mean to be “Value-Driven”? A value is something deeper inside us. It’s what motivates us to do something for free and when no one is looking. This often comes natural for parents. Parents take care of their families at their own expense and most often no one notices their daily sacrifices. It may be easier for certain professions to be more naturally value-driven than other professions. Medical-Care professionals may have selected their career because they had a passion for curing diseases, healing injuries or just overall patient care. Sure, they get paid for what they do, but maybe some of them are more driven by their personal values than they are by their paychecks.

To be value-driven is like a country having a constitution. It’s the set of beliefs that a government can keep referring to, to guide their decision making. Similarly, values can also be a guiding light for individuals. Passively, values can be used as a guide to help us make difficult decisions. More actively, values can be used to motivate us to do more, to stretch and to grow and to go the extra mile. Internal to ourselves, our values need to be non-negotiable and unmovable. This concept is the root of courage.  This ties in with practicing personal accountability.

How do you connect your values to your behavior? You can do this by creating a personal value statement! I challenge you to take time to reflect, find your value-statement, document it, and to then base every decision you make on this - that is how you will become value-driven.
